“Graphic variation in 10th century semi-vernacular Dūnhuáng texts”

In this presentation I will first introduce the “Database of Medieval Chinese Texts” (https://www.database-of-medieval-chinese-texts.be/index.php), a joint project of Ghent University (Belgium) and DILA (Taiwan). The project aims at producing high-quality marked-up digital editions of Dūnhuáng texts, with a focus on early Chán texts and semi-vernacular texts from various genres (變文, 因緣, 講經文, etc.). In the process of producing the editions, variant character forms are extracted from the manuscripts and input into the Variant Characters module of the database. In the course of six years, ca. 43.000 variants were registered and currently ca. 7.000 – 10.000 variant characters are added every year (based on the work of the manuscript encoders from DILA, Ghent University researchers, in addition to Master student internships). The module aims at facilitating the research on variant forms of Chinese characters and the reading of Dūnhuáng texts, and also features a number of analytical tools. The DB is also permanently adjusted to the requirements of ongoing doctoral research projects at Ghent University.

In the second part of the presentation, the focus will be on a case study, a narrative (a kind of unusual “short-bio” of Śākyamuni) in Or.8210/S.3096. Despite the shortness of the text, it features a great number of “variations”, such as variations of the content (in comparison to “canonical” descriptions of Buddha’s life), of character forms (e.g., 俗字, semi-cursive character, characters with adjusted phonophorics, etc.), and a multitude of phonetically used characters (so-called 通假字, including unusual phonetic substitutions based on the regional reading of characters in Medieval Northwestern China).
