> LAI Yunfan赖云帆( Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 - CRLAO) "Inverse marking in Khroskyabs (Tibeto-Burman)"

Mercredi 29 mars 2017, de 16h à 18h
INaLCO, Centre de recherches Europe-Eurasie (CREE), Salle 200, 2 rue de Lille, 75007 Paris

Abstract

Khroskyabs is a Rgyalrongic language spoken in the Tibetan half of Sichuan. Like other Rgyalrongic languages, Khroskyabs exhibits an inverse marking system. Previous accounts on the inverse in Khroskyabs include Lai (2015) (Wobzi dialect) and Sun (2000) (’Brongrdzong dialect). We will focus on two of the Khroskyabs dialects, Wobzi and the previously undescribed Siyuewu dialect, exhibiting different patterns of inverse.

Consider the Wobzi dialect as a example. In local scenarios (1→2, 2→1) and the mixed domain (1→3, 3→1, 2→3, 3→2), the inverse marker u- must be overt if the agent ranks lower than the patient in the empathy hierarchy. In non-local scenarios (3→3), the inverse marker u- must be overt in the presence of a syllabic pre ix (typically a directional prefix), and merges with it (i.e. nə-u-→ n-u- (PFV-INV-)); if the verb does not need or require a syllabic prefix, the verb is left unmarked:

Wobzi non-local scenarios:

a. Generic (without inverse)

stâ=ɣə srú dzî ænɑ sú=ɣə srú mə-dzî

tiger=ERG meat eat1 but cattle=ERG meat NEG1-eat1

Tigers eat meat, but cattle do not eat meat.

b. Imperfective (with inverse)

tʂɑɕî=ɣə dʐonmɑ̂ n-u-ndəɣ́

Bkrashis=ERG Sgrolma IPFV.PST-INV-love2

Bkrashis loved Sgrolma.

c. vdê ‘to see’ (without inverse)

tʂɑɕî=ɣə dʐonmɑ̂ vdé=si

Bkrashis=ERG Sgrolma see2=IFR

Bkrashis saw Sgrolma.

After the description of the inverse morphology of both dialects, we will hypothesise the evolutionary path of the Khroskyabs inverse from a diachronic point of view, and a comparative study involving Rgyalrong and Horpa-Stau will also be made. We will see how the inverse in Khroskyabs can contribute to linguistic typology.

Abstract

Mercredi 1 mars 2017, de 16h30 à 18h
INaLCO, Centre de recherches Europe-Eurasie (CREE), Salle 200, 2 rue de Lille, 75007 Paris

Abstract
(Le séminaire sera présenté en français.)

Although the existence of antipassive constructions has been mentioned in several Sino-Tibetan languages (Doornenbal 2009, 225-7, Jacques 2014, Bickel & Gaenszle 2015), this topic has not yet received as much attention as other voice constructions such as passive or causative.
This paper is a survey of antipassive constructions in the Sino-Tibetan family. Since all of  these constructions are historically transparent, they are classified by their diachronic source. Recent work on diachronic typology (Janic 2013, 235, Jacques 2014, Sansò to appear) has shown that antipassive constructions have four major sources in the world’s languages:

• Agent nominalizations. (‘he is the hitter’ ➝ ‘he hits (intr)’)
• Generic nouns/Indefinite pronouns in object position (‘he hits things/stuff’ ➝ ‘he hits (intr)’)
• Action nominalization + light verb (Creissels 2012) / denominal verbalizer (Jacques 2014) (‘he does hitting’ ➝ ‘he hits (intr)’)
• Reflexive (with an intermediate stage as ‘co-participation’ Creissels & Nouguier-Voisin 2008) (‘they hit themselves/each other’ ➝ ‘they partake in hitting actions’ ➝ ‘they hit (intr)’)

In this paper, I first present a definition of antipassive and discuss related antipassive-like constructions in several languages of the ST family. Then, I provide evidence of antipassive derivations originating from three out of the four main attested sources: action nominalization, generic nouns and reflexives. These derivations are all of recent origin, but some are argued to be reconstructible to lower branches of the family. Finally, I present an overview of the distribution of antipassive construction throughout ST.

, "Two Modal Particles in Caijia (quasi-Sinitic): Contrast and Overlap"

Mercredi 15 février 2017, de 16h30 à 18h
INaLCO, Centre de recherches Europe-Eurasie (CREE), Salle 200, 2 rue de Lille, 75007 Paris

Abstract

Caijia is a non-classified and endangered language of SVO spoken by less than 1000 people in northwestern Guizhou Province in southwestern China. This paper presents an analysis of two modal particlestv̩55(< ‘obtain, acquire’) and to55 (< ? ‘to’) in Caijia which both possess a basic meaning of ‘can’. These two particles are phonetically and syntactically similar ([VP to55/tv̩55]), due to which difficulties arise when distinguishing one from the other. Both of them are also multi-functionally used in the realm of modality.

            The contrast is very clear when expressing participant-internal and deontic modality (cf. van der Auwera & Plungian 1998) and there is almost no overlap between to55 and tv̩55, i.e. to55 is mainly for participant-internal possibility and tv̩55is mainly for deontic obligation, permission and prohibition. However, we observe that overlap and contrast between tv̩55and to55 both exist when expressing non-deontic and epistemic possibilities. For example,

Overlap:

(1)       ŋo55     kv̩55     kʰua21  o.         ɣa21     to55/tv̩55         o.

            1          foot     good    PRT    walk    can/can           PRT

            ‘My foot has recovered. I can walk now.’

Contrast:

(2)       a.         mɔ21       sɿ55,     niɔ55    sɿ55      je21      piɔ55-kʰɯ55      lɛ21tsʰɛ21

                       that     water   want    let        3S        boil-open        only then

                       ã21       tv̩55/*to55.

                       drink   obtain/can

                       ‘The water, it needs to be boiled so that one can drink it.’

b.         mɔ21    lɔ21po55           niɔ21    ʈv̩55      ɪŋ55soŋ21          tsa55-ʈv̩55

            that     peach   want    PASS   sun                  bake-hit (the target)

            tsʰɛ21   tsʰɿ55    to55/*tv̩55.

            then     red       can/obtain

            ‘Peaches can only turn red, after being shined on by the sun.’

Consequently, this paper sets out to find out the rules for the overlap and to define the contrast between to55 and tv̩55in order to propose a plausible explanation for this phenomenon. Two hypotheses are thus set up for this purpose: Hypothesis I: to55 develops from the resultative to55 and is controlled by the verb, but tv̩55develops from the predicative full verb tv̩55‘be all right, be suitable’ reanalyzed from ‘obtain, acquire’. Hypothesis II: there are two factors that are responsible for the overlap and contrast of these two particles: i) their proper source constructions and ii) degree of grammaticalization.

, « Semelfactive vs. multiplicative patterns in Sinitic — with a special attention to verbs of body movement »

Mercredi 30 novembre 2016, de 16h à 18h
INaLCO, Salle 1, 2 rue de Lille, 75007 Paris

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need to set up an inventory of semelfactive verbs in Chinese that would be based on language-internal parameters rather than just on a list of verbs translated from English. For this purpose, we investigate the correlation between semelfactive and iterative patterns in Mandarin and a few other Sinitic languages, to show that in Sinitic, as in other languages, there exists an iconic correspondence between these forms. The forms to be discussed include Mandarin patterns such as “yi-V” vs. “yi-V-yi-V”, but also other patterns found in some southeastern Sinitic languages that involve a postverbal classifier, i.e. V下 “V-xia” vs. V下V下 “V-xia-V-xia” in Yue and Hakka or V记 “V-ji” vs. V记V记 “V-ji-V-ji” in Wu. In either case, verbs of body movement play a prominent role, and this highlights the special position of these verbs in the inventory of semelfactive verbs.
